カキノキ科(Ebenaceae)は、Diospyros, Euclea, Royena, Lissocapraの4属からなる小さな科です。多くの種はDiosphyros(カキノキ属)に存していて、属内には11のクレードが認められると報告されています(Duangjai et al, 2009)。カキノキ(Diospyros kaki)の果実としての利用は身近ですが(Yonemori et al, 2008)、カキノキ属にはエボニーあるいは黒檀として知られる高級材となる種が含まれています(Allo et al.,2020)。
横浜市内ではこども植物園のくだもの園で多くのカキノキ(Diospyros kaki)の品種を見る事が出来ます。
