サクラソウ科(Primulaceae)は、今世紀に入って大きな再編が行われて、旧ヤブコウジ科(Myrsinaceae)と旧テオフラスタ科(Theophrastaceae)を統合し、現在は22属1000種ほどのグループになっています(Martins et al.,2003)。サクラソウ亜科には多くの園芸種が含まれますが、種数が最も多いのはヤブコウジ属で、Julius et al.(2021)によれば、11の亜属が識別されています。これらの亜属は他の属と入れ子になっているため、単系とは言えず、今後、整理が進むと思われます。
