ベイズ法を用いた解析結果の一例(Lane et al.,2006))では、コンブ科が2つクレードに分かれる可能性が示されています。属名の変更など、今後整理が進むと思われます。
ジャイアントケルプとして知られているオオウキモ属(Macrocystis spp.)は数種記載されてきましたが、現在では1属1種(Macrocystis pyrifera)に統合されています(Macaya and Zuccarello,2010)。
コノドントの系統位置は、近年では無顎類側系統群に置かれることが多くなっていますが、未だに結論は出ていないようです。そもそも脊椎動物ではないという考え方ももあり、脊椎動物亜門の上位タクソンとして提案されている有頭動物門の姉妹群として位置づける説(Tuner et al.,2010)も提出されています。この説によればコノドント類は門(Phylum)レベルの独立タクソンに相当することになります。
