マツブサ科は、スイレン目に続いて古い時代に被子植物から分岐したと考えられているアウストロバイレヤ目に置かれた科(Zanis et al.,2003)で、Bell et al(2010)によれば、ジュラ紀末期には既に分化していたと推定されています。身近な植物ではシキミやサネカズラが属しています。
