ヒユ科(Amaranthaceae)は、葉緑体の遺伝子解析の結果から、旧アカザ科(Chenopodiaceae)と識別できないことが明らかとなったため統合され、約180属2500種となっています(Kadereit et al.,2003)。ホウレンソウ(Spinacia oleracea)、とんぶり(=ホウキギの実)(Bassia scoparia)などが食用として利用されています。
