マツモ科(Ceratophyllaceae)はマツモ属(Ceratophyllum)のみからから構成されていて4種が記載されています(Christenhusz and Byng,2016)。マツモ目(Ceratophyllales)は、主要被子植物(Mesangiospermae)の中では古い時期(白亜紀前期)に分化したとグループだと考えられてきましたが、現在では、センリョウ目(Chloranthales)または真正双子葉類(Eudicots)の姉妹群と考えられています(Kvaček et al.,2016)。
マツモ(Ceratophyllum demersum)はキンギョモとしても知られる身近な植物でしたが、野生状態では減少の一途を辿っており、三浦半島では既に絶滅しているようです(神奈川県植物誌,2018)。写真は、こども植物園で栽培されていたものです。
