ゴマ科(Pedaliaceae)は、ツノゴマ科(Martyniaceae)が独立した結果、13属75種ほどのグループになっています(Christenhusz and Byng,2016)。熱帯域を中心に分布していて、姉妹群であるキツネノマゴ科(Acanthaceae)との分岐は、古第三紀始新世の頃と推定されています(Zoclanclounon et al.,2023)。
