アゼナ科(Linderniaceae)は、かてはゴマノハグサ科(Scrophulariaceae s.l.)におかれていましたが、現在ではシソ目の中の独立科となっています(APG-IC,2016)。23属220種ほどで構成されていまずか(Christenhusz and Byng,2016)、プラスミド(核外DNA)の解析によれば属間の入れ子が報告されている(Zoclanclounon et al.,2023)ため、今後とも整理が進むと思われます。近縁のキツネノマゴ科(Acanthaceae)、ゴマ科(Pedaliaceae)からの分岐は古第三紀始新世の頃と推定されています。
