ツノゴマ科(Martyniaceae)は、5属16種からなる小さな科で(Christenhusz and Byng,2016)、以前にはゴマ科(Pedaliaceae)の中に置かれていたこともありますが、現在はシソ目(Lamiales)に属する独立科となっています(APG-IV,2016)。アメリカ大陸のみに自生しており、写真のツノゴマ属(Proboscidea)は北米に、イビセラ属(Ibicella)は南米に分布します(Gormley et al.,2015)。
旧大陸では確実な化石の報告もないようですが、ツノゴマ(Proboscidea louisianica)は、最近トルコ(Sevgi et al.,2017)と北アフリカ(Mokni,2021)に帰化していることが報告されています。
