サガリバナ科(Lecythidaceae)は、20属440種からなるグループで、主として熱帯雨林を構成しています(Morton et al.,1997))。科内には6つの亜科が識別でき、食用とされるブラジルナッツノキ(Bertholletia excelsa)が含まれます。
