センリョウ目は、長年、分岐分類的な位置づけが謎とされて来ましたが、現在ではスイレン、シキミなどを含む基部被子植物より後、モクレン目群よりは前に、他の被子植物から分岐したと考えられている目で、センリョウ科のみで構成されます(Doyle & Endress,2014)。
　我国の自生種では、センリョウとヒトリシズカが代表種です。センリョウ(千両)と言えば、万両、十両などを思う浮かべることも多いのですが、これらは系統分類からみると近いものではありません。

注：ANITA libes = ANA grade = Basal angiosperms : 基部被子植物(アンボレラ目、スイレン目、アウストロバイレヤ目)、概ね、モクレン目群より以前に他の被子植物から分岐したと考えられている群であり、多系が認められ、歴史的経緯も含めると異説が多数ある。
