APG-IIIでキバナオモダカ科(Limnocharitaceae)を統合したオモダカ科(Alismataceae)(Iles et al.,2013)は、その後AGP-IV(2016)でシバナ科(Juncaginaceae)とマウンディア科(Maundiaceae)がこの科から独立し、現在は17属から構成される水生植物となっています。わが国では、水田雑草としてのオモダカが自生するのですが、水田の減少に伴ってあまりみかけることはなくなりました。御節料理で今でもみかけることのあるクワイ(慈姑)はオモダカの栽培品種です。
