クルミ科(Juglandaceae)は、ヤマモモ科(Myricaceae)の姉妹群とされるグループで、ヤマモモ科との分岐は白亜紀後期(約8870万年前)と推定されています。かつて別の科とされていたロイプテレア属(Rhoiptelea)を含めて現在3亜科に整理されています(Zhou et al.,2021)。
