ヤマモモ科(Myricaceae)は、クルミ科(Juglandaceae)の姉妹群とされる小さなグループで、現在3属あるいは4属に整理されています(Herbert et al.,2006)。ヤマモモ(Myrica rubra)は、放線菌との共生により窒素固定ができる放線菌根性植物(Actinorhizal plants)としても知られています(Huguet et al.,2005, 山中・岡部,2008)。
