トウダイグサ科(Euphorbiaceae)は、全世界の熱帯域を中心に様々な環境に適応しているグループで、DNA解析の結果から形態的に多様な種をひとまとめにした結果(Thakur and Patil,2011)、約7500種を包含しています。少なくとも3つの亜科が識別されていて、約2000種が記載されてるトウダイグサ属(Euphorbia)が最大種数の属です。クリスマスシーズンには欠かすことのできないポインセチア、春先の朱色が美しいアカメガシワなどもトウダイグサ科の一員です。
