ブドウ科(Vitaceae)は、ブドウ属(Vitis)、ツタ属(Vitis)、ヤブカラシ属(Cayratia)など、14属約900種からなる蔓性のグループで、現在は単独の科としてブドウ目(Vitales)に配されています(APG-IV,2016)。ブドウ目は、バラ目群(Rosids)に属していて、マメ類(Fabids)、アオイ類(Malvids)より先に分岐したと推測されています。
ブドウ(Vitis vinifera)はワインの原料として利用されてきましたので、最も古い栽培植物の一つです。エジプト第三王朝時代には、既に栽培されていたと考えられていて、その栽培の歴史は有史以前に遡るとも言われています(Núñez and Walker,1989)。ブドウ属の分岐は、人類誕生以前の古第三紀中新世と推定されていて、ヨーロッパから北半球全域に分布拡大したと考えられています(Liua et al.,2016)。
