ナデシコ目(Caryophyllales)は39科約12500種から構成されていて、系統分類が未整理の科が残されています。その中でツルムラサキ科(Basellaceae)は、4属19種からなる小さな科です(Eriksson,2007)。ツルムラサキ(Basella alba)は、緑色のつる草ですが、最近、野菜として利用されることの多くなったツルムラサキは、紫色の栽培種シンツルムラサキです。
