ガマズミ科(Viburnaceae)は、かつてはスイカズラ科(Caprifoliaceae)の所属だったガマズミ属(Viburnum)とニワトコ属(Sambucus)を旧レンプクソウ科に統合してマツムシソウ目(Dipsacales)レンプクソウ科(Adoxaceae)として成立しました(APG-III,2009)。ところが、この科の名称についてはReveal(2008)の提案があり、これが2016年8月の維管束植物命名委員会(NCVP)の投票で採択され、現在はガマズミ科に名称変更されています(Wilson,2016)。ガマズミ科は5属約225種からなり(Christenhusz and Byng,2016)、分布の中心は冷温帯ですので、三浦半島でもカマズミ属、ニワトコ属は、普通種としてよく見かけます(神奈川県植物誌,2018)。
※Adoxaceaeは保留名(nom. cons.)となっているため、現在でもレンプクソウ科の名称も多く見かけます。
