トベラ科(Pittosporaceae)は、かつてはバラ目(Rosales)に近縁と考えられていましたが、現在はセリ科(Apiaceae)の姉妹群としてのセリ目(Apiales)に置かれています(APG-IV,2016)。9属最大240種ほどで構成され、その多くはオーストラリアに分布しています(Chandler et al.,2007)。三浦半島でみられるのは、トベラ(Pittosporum tobira)1種のみですが海岸域ではよくみかける普通種です。
