ウコギ科(Araliaceae)は、約43属1650種からなる科(Christenhusz and Byng,2016)ですが、未整理の事項が多く残されており、亜科以下は今後とも再編成される可能性あります(Plunkett et al.,2004)。特に、この科で最大のグループで観葉植物カポック類として知られるフカノキ属(Schefflera)は単系ではないことが示されており(Plunkett et al.,2020)、今後整理が進むと思われます。
かつては、セリ科(Apiaceae)に置かれていたチドメグサ亜科(Hydrocotyloideae)はこの科の中で早い時期に分岐したグループとして編入されています。
