ビャクダン科(Santalaceae)は、40属550種以上から構成され、熱帯、亜熱帯を中心に広く分布する半寄生植物です。寄生の程度は様々で殆どの種は葉緑体を持っているのですが、少なくとも水分を宿主に依存しているタイプが多いそうです。
　Der and Nickrent(2008)による遺伝子解析によれば、科内に9つのクレードが識別されていて、エノキ、ムクノキの枝などでよくみかけるヤドリギ(Viscum album)が属しているヤドリギ属は、かつてヤドリギ科として独立していましたが、APG-III(2009)からこの科に移されています(河原,2014)。
