モクマオウ科(Casuarinaceae)は、外見が針葉樹のように見えるため、かつては早い時期に他の被子植物から分岐したと考えられたこともありましたが、遺伝子解析の結果、現在はブナ目に置かれている約4属91種からなるグループです(Christenhusz and Byng, 2016)。モクマオウ属(Casuarina)1属のみに整理する考え方もあったようですが、遺伝子解析の結果は、Allocasuarina, Casuarina, Ceuthostoma, Gymnostomaの4属とすることを支持しているようです(Sogo et al.,2011)。
　モクマオウ科は熱帯を中心に分布するので、我が国での自生はありません。30年以上前の南インドで、恐らく防風林として植栽されたこの科の並木を車窓から見たことがありました。同席だった現地の研究者に『マツの一種でしょうか？』と尋ねたところ、『あれはキャシュライナです。裸子植物ではなく被子植物ですよ。』と笑われたのを思い出しました。
