アオイ科(Malvaceae)は、遺伝子解析の研究成果に基づいて、旧アオイ科(Malvaceae)、旧シナノキ科(Tiliaceae)、旧アオギリ科(Sterculiaceae)、旧パンヤ科(Bombacaceae)を統合して設置された科で、9亜科4000種以上が記載されています(Judd and Manchester,1997)。旧アオイ科に相当するアオイ亜科(Malvoideae)の各種に加えて、チョコレートの原料として欠かすことのできないカカオ(Theobroma cacao)、シナノキ(Tilia japonica)、バオバブ(Adansonia spp.)などもアオイ科に属しています。
