ノウゼンハレン科(Tropaeolaceae)は、3属約90種からなる草本グループで、かつてはフウロソウ目(Geraniales)に置かれていましたが。現在ではアブラナ目(Brassicales)に移されています(Andersson and Andersson,2000)。観賞用の栽培をよく見かけるキンレンカ(Tropaeolum majus)は、食用とされることもあり、その際の辛味が似ていることから、クレソンの属名(Nasturtium)が英名になっています。
