サボテン科(Cactaceae)は、アメリカ大陸の乾燥地で分化してきたグループで、スベリヒユ科から分岐したと考えられています。科内で最も分しているのは、カクタス亜科(Cactoideae、1000種以上)とオプンティア亜科(Opuntioideae、約370種)で(Majure .,2023)科では約125属、最大約1990種が記載されています。サボテン科は、全種がワシントン条約の附属書IIに掲載されていますので、輸出国の許可なく移動することは禁止されています。
