スベリヒユ科(Portulacaceae)は、かつて30属450種により構成されていましたが、遺伝子解析の利用による整理で、現在は1属116種と小さな科になっています(Nyffeler and Eggli, 2010)。夏の七草の一つであるスベリヒユ(Portulaca oleracea)をみかけることが少なった一方で、改良の進んだ園芸種ハナスベリヒユ(＝ポーチュラカ Portulaca oleracea × P. grandiflora)を見かけることは珍しくありません。
