イワタバコ科(Gesneriaceae)は、3亜科160属3300種以上から構成される科で(Möller and Clark,2013)、以前はゴマノハグサ科の一部とされたこともありましたが、APG分類体系ではシソ目(Lamiales)に独立科として配置されています(APG-IV,2016) 。イワタバコ科は、熱帯を中心に分布するため、我が国での自生種は多くないのですが、アフリカに自生するグループには園芸的価値の高い種があり、園芸店ではアフリカスミレ(セントポーリア)やストレプトカーパスをの姿をしばしば見かけます。アフリカスミレはかつてセントポーリア属(Saintpaulia)として知られていましたが、DNA分析の結果、ストレプトカーパス属(Streptocarpus)内の入れ子として配置することが明らかとなっています(Nishii et al.,2015)。
