ソテツ科(Cycadaceae)は、1属約107種からなる科(Christenhusz and Byng,2016)で、現生ではザミア科(Zamiaceae)が姉妹群と考えられています。我が国ではソテツ(Cycas revoluta)が庭園木等によく利用されているので身近ではありますが、そのソテツも含めて全種がワシントン条約(CITES)付属書Ⅱ以上として記載されている絶滅危惧種の扱いになっています(CITES,2023)。科内に13のクレードが認められていますが(Liua et al., 2018)、科以下の分類は未だ流動的の様です。
ソテツ類は、イチョウやシーラカンスと並んで生きた化石だと言われてきたのですが、現生のソテツ属が分岐したのは中新世後期(約1200万年前)と推定されており(Rull,2012)、多くの被子植物に比べて古いとは言い難いことが示されています。
