ツヅラフジ科(Menispermaceae)は、熱帯域を中心として分布する蔓植物で、約72属520種が記載されています。同科はキンポウゲ目(Ranunculales)の所属で、キンポウゲ科(Ranunculaceae)とメギ科が姉妹群と考えられていて、科内には2つの亜科(Menispermoideae, Tinosporoideae)が識別されています(Wefferling et al.,2013)。我国は分布の北限に当たりますが、アオツヅラフジは三浦半島域でも普通種です。
