スズカケノキ科(Platanaceae)は、スズカケノキ属(Platanus)のみから構成されます。街路樹としてよくみかけるプラタナスは、交配種のモミジバスズカケノキPlatanus x acerifoliaが殆どです。
　スズカケノキ科の化石は白亜紀前期(アルビアン)にまで遡ることができ、形態的にはマンサク科(Hamamelidaceae) に類似するとされてきましたが、遺伝子解析の結果によれば、マンサク科より早い時期に分岐していたことが示され(Schwarzwalderand Dilcher,1991)、現在ではヤマモガシ目(Proteales)に配置されています(APG-IV,2016)。
