ツゲ科(Buxaceae)は、真正双子葉類として早い時期に分岐した群として、単独のツゲ目(Buxales)に位置付けられています(Hansen et al.,2007)。世界中の温帯域で5属程度が知られていますが、多くの種はツゲ属(Buxus)に属しており、我が国に自生するツゲは緻密で美しい材質を利用した工芸品に利用されています(田中,2018)。
